Top 5 Tips For Your First Wedding Dress Fitting

Once you’ve found the one (dress, that is!) there’s still much to do before you walk down the aisle. Your wedding gown needs to fit perfectly. That’s why fittings and alterations are a very important part of the process. At The Collection Bridal in Orlando, Florida, our stylists are here to guide you every step of the way, from the very first appointment to your final fitting. Now you can learn these tips from the bridal experts. Learn about your first wedding dress fitting here.

  1. Buy undergarments and shoes before the first fitting

Supportive undergarments include a comfortable, non-slip strapless bra, padded bra, shapewear, spandex, and underwear that you plan to wear under your dress. This gives you a better idea of how the dress will look and feel on your wedding day. Make sure you can move around comfortably!

  1. Bring bridal shoes to the appointment

You can buy bridal shoes prior to the fitting to help determine the right length for your dress. If you don’t have the right shoes yet, you can bring in a pair of heels that are similar to the height you desire. It’s important to inform your seamstress if they are not the right height so they can make adjustments as necessary.

  1. Try on headpieces and veils

Accessories, headpieces, and veils can change the appearance of your wedding dress based on what you decide to wear. For example, a long cathedral veil will fall differently on the dress than a shorter one. Try on a few different types of veils and trains to learn which works best for you.

  1. Learn about the bustle

During your first fitting, watch how the dress moves to make sure there is no bunching or pulling of material. For a full-length dress with a bustle, it’s essential to learn about any buttons, hooks, and loops so you can become familiar with them. If possible, try to bring the person who will help you in and out of the dress for a quick tutorial.

  1. Know how you will wear your hair

You may choose to let your hair down or pin it up in an updo. Whichever way you choose, try to wear your hair in a similar manner to how you plan to wear it on your wedding day. This way, you will be able to see where your hair falls on the dress and whether or not you want to alter your style.

During the initial fitting, you can speak with a seamstress about what other details need to be taken care of in the alterations process. This includes placing custom straps, altering the neckline, or adding lace or beads to certain areas. Give yourself plenty of time to make these alterations to determine how many other fittings you may need.

At The Collection Bridal, all of our alterations are done in the salon. We are excited to work with brides to make sure they are getting the dress of your dreams. To learn more about our bridal shop, contact our staff and schedule an appointment.

What To Know About Wedding Dress Alterations

At our bridal shop in Orlando, we know that the right fit is everything. While wedding dresses are not always made-to-measure, fittings and alterations ensure that your dream dress looks as if it were made just for you. At The Collection Bridal, we have an expert team of stylists who help you look and feel gorgeous on your wedding day. Not only that, we help brides understand the process of alterations so the dress will perfectly match your unique size and shape. Here’s how to approach wedding dress alterations like a pro!

Requesting Bridal Dress Alterations

The Collection Bridal has an in-house team for alterations, so feel free to express all the changes you want to be made during the process. Don’t be afraid to ask questions or bring up concerns. Our professionals have encountered many different types of situations and can help you out.

To take the stress out of alterations, you should purchase your dress early so you have plenty of time for fittings. We suggest a period of 10 months or more, since it may take up to a few months for the dress to arrive in-store. When making major changes to the dress, leave ample room in your schedule in case you need another fitting.

Budgeting And Bridal Accessories

Many brides leave room in their wedding budget for the dress and accessories but will often forget about alterations. Small changes won’t result in expensive charges, but keep in mind that any dramatic changes such as adding lace or beading may cost more.

When prepping for alterations, bring your wedding shoes to the appointment. If you haven’t picked them yet, bring in a pair with comparable height size so your tailor can make adjustments to the hem. You should also bring undergarments and any other accessories you plan to wear on your wedding day. The right strapless bra or shapewear can make a big difference! And while jewelry may not make a difference for fit, they help you visualize your final look and see where they fall on the dress and neckline.

The Final Fitting

At the final fitting, the hemline should gently touch the ground. This way, you can walk and dance comfortably without fear of tripping. When you try on the dress again, take a walk around the shop and make sure it is the right length. You can bring a close friend (such as your maid of honor) or a family member to the final fitting. An extra set of eyes will be able to catch certain details you may not be able to. If something doesn’t feel right, don’t be afraid to speak up! Being vocal is an important part of the process so you can avoid an uncomfortable fit.

When you come in for your appointment at The Collection Bridal, we take the time to get to know you and your personal style. After a sit-down consultation, we will help you shop our salon and select a variety of gowns to try on. To find out more about our salon and services, reach out and speak to us today!

What is a Trunk Show?

What is a Trunk Show?!

I am sure a lot of brides ask themselves, “what is a Trunk Show?” I know I did when I first heard the term. I believe I even asked myself if there are actual trunks! Ha ha

Nevertheless, some designers still send Modern Trunk size boxes full of selections from there latest collection!  We are always in awe while opening the boxes full of sparkling lace and exquisite embroidery.

A bride can expect to experience a Trunk Show to start like a regular appointment, first with a sit down consultation with their stylist. Then the stylist and bride will go through the Trunk Show gowns and decide what gowns she would like to try on. Sometimes designers give incentives for purchasing during a Trunk Show.

Don’t worry! We always give the opportunity to try on other designers as well. We always want to ensure you love your dress!

We are excited to see you at our upcoming Trunk Show

What Should I Wear to My Rehearsal Dinner?

Now that you’ve chosen the dress of your dreams, there is still one more essential outfit you need to plan for — the rehearsal dinner. Brides, of course, can wear whatever they like to their own rehearsal dinner, which usually occurs the night before the actual wedding. While the possibilities are endless, you might be wondering what kind of look goes best, especially if this is going to be a special night with close friends and family around. The good news is that anything goes! So here are some of our best recommendations for what you can wear to your rehearsal dinner.

The Little (White) Dress

You’ve heard of the little black dress for nights out on the town, but have you heard of the little white dress? This option is for brides who like a classic look and silhouette. What’s great about this look is how versatile it is. For example, you can wear it with pearls and laced up heels for a sweet, sophisticated look. Or layer with a bold jacket and sandals for something slightly more casual.

Since the dress is white, brides can add on touches of their wedding colors to complete the look. Use your jewelry, handbag, heels, or a blazer to match the theme of your wedding.

The Statement Skirt

There are many different directions you can take with a statement skirt. A long, vintage-style flare skirt is perfect for a formal affair. If your skirt is dressy, keep it simple on top with a neutral color. You can always add interesting pieces for more color and variety.

For high-waisted pencil skirts, you can play with textures, colors, and metallics for something a little more upbeat and bold. Since this is sunny South Florida, you can try some bright florals to make it pop. Complete your bridal outfit with a matching clutch and high-heeled pumps. Your friends and family are sure to love it!

The Jumpsuit or Romper

Are you a trendy bride? Now you can wow your guests with a stunning jumpsuit or stylish romper for your wedding rehearsal dinner in Orlando. What’s great about this trend is that it’s very easily layerable. Add a statement jacket or boots to pump up the look.

Jumpsuits can also be dressed down for the more casual bride who still wants to radiate on her big night. This very feminine look seems effortless, yet looks stunning. Jumpsuits also look great in photos as well!

Winter Trends We Love

Hi everyone! So December is right around the corner and we wanted to talk a little bit about some winter wedding trends that we love! As for our beautiful brides, long sleeves are stunning in winter months like December, January, and February. We also love, love, love some sparkle on the dress! Or sparkly shoes are fun, and with some beautiful jewel accessories the look will be complete! Well, with a stunning veil of course. If that’s your thing. Think glamorous! Even a cozy fur cape or coat for some pictures come out beautifully! We absolutely love capes and have some beautiful options here at The Collection.

As for some venue touches, we think candle and light backdrops are very important for winter weddings and can be absolutely stunning. Grand floral arrangements are also always stunning. As for bridesmaid dresses or mother of the bride dresses, we think jewel tones are so beautiful during the winter months. And darker colors actually show flowers better which make for beautiful pictures.

Don’t be afraid to go bold for your winter wedding! We fully support that. And as always, feel free to call or email us with any questions or to book an appointment!

We hope to see you soon.

Sample Sale!

Hi guys! So we have some very exciting news to share with you all. Starting tomorrow and going through the end of the month we will be holding a sample sale at The Collection! Basically, a sample sale at our store is a sale consisting of beautiful bridal gowns that have been marked down tremendously. You could potentially save thousands of dollars by saying “YES” to one of these dresses. Some of the gowns may have slight imperfections, not all, but some. But with the money you would be saving, it would more than likely be feasible to have some adjustments made to the dress. We will have over 100 dresses of all different silhouettes and styles for our brides to take a look at and try on. Your stylist will be there to guide you the whole time.

Try to come with a price point in mind! Also, it’s important to remember that this is first come first serve. Feel free to call and make an appointment or stop in if you get a chance. We’re looking forward to seeing you soon!

Fittings

Hi everyone!

Today we want to talk a little bit about what happens after you say “YES!” to the dress. So, here we go—alterations! We’ll start your wedding gown alterations about six to eight weeks before your big day. Usually brides have three fittings with one of our amazing seamstresses, but you could possibly have more depending on the dress or if you’re planning on doing custom changes.

Your first appointment will be your “fit check appointment” where you will try on your gown that we ordered for you months prior. You’re going to try it on in order to see how it fits, what undergarments you may need to purchase to help the gown fit as best as possible. You will also try the shoes on with the dress to see if you like how they look or if you want something a little different, maybe taller or shorter. You’re not seeing a seamstress at this appointment, this is just a time for you to assess how the gown fits your body. But this is the perfect appointment to get your mind prepared for the alteration process you’ll go through with your gown and then set up a time and day for your first fitting.

The first fitting is all about the seamstress assessing what needs to be done to the gown in order to tailor it to your body. To have this gown assessment be accurate you will need to have all of your essentials for this fitting and future fittings which include any undergarments such as spanks, long lined bras, strapless bras, and shoes. We have our own selection of cups and long lined bras if you are interested, and you probably went over the bra situation during your prior fit check appointment.

The next piece of advice we want to give our brides is very important. We know that most brides are in a workout frenzy mode before their wedding, and while we support you in your journey, your body needs to be where it is going to stay at your first fitting appointment. This is important because the seamstress is assessing and pinning your gown to your body. She is pinning it to have it fit the way your body is at that point in time. When your body changes this will interrupt the way the gown was pinned and fits.

After assessing what needs to be adjusted to your gown, your seamstress will then start to pin your gown which will roughly include the bust, hem, and bustle. This is why having your shoes during this appointment is imperative. The hem is how the gown falls when you walk and dance, so if you do not have your shoes it is very hard to assess how much we need to adjust the hem for you. The undergarments will determine how your bust, waist and hips are fitting in your gown as well. Undergarments are life!

**Custom Changes- We may or may not start that during this fitting depending on what needs to be done**

The second fitting is the fitting where you see your gown start to come to life. Everything is hand basted. This is the time to make small tweaks to the gown to have it to your liking. You will also go over your bustle at this time or start on your bustle. As stated before all brides are different and are case by case, so some brides will address different stages of adjustments to their gown at different fittings. This is the fitting for you to speak now or forever hold your peace! Lol. It’s not that black and white, but kind of. You really want the seamstress (unless you are working on a custom change) to be able to adjust or make any changes at this time. You want her to be able to really know everything that needs to be completed on your gown for your next fitting.

Bring a friend or family member to learn and record your bustle!

Attention: If your body dramatically changes from your first to second fitting it is like we have to start the alterations process all over again. We have to re-pin and re-assess what needs to be done which will make the alterations process take longer and may make you have to have more appointments than originally planned. Depending on how much work has to be re-done you may have to be even more flexible with your schedule in order for the seamstress to complete the work. Remember she assessed and planned out how much time it was going to take and how much needed to be done at the first fitting. We’re not trying to sound harsh, once again we completely support you working out and getting your body to where you want it to be! But it’s best to try and be where you want to be on your wedding day at your first fitting. This will make life easier and less stressful for you as well, trust us.

**Custom changes will be started at this time if they weren’t at the first fitting**

Your third fitting will usually be your final fitting unless you’re making a custom change or changes and your seamstress has told you that you will have more than three appointments. All fabric has been cut and sewn. This is final and usually can’t be changed or adjusted at this time. (Sorry to sound harsh) But, this is why the second fitting is so important to talk about your concerns. We also want to state again that depending on the case by case, the third fitting is not always the final one, yet you will know at your second fitting what to expect on your third, meaning you will know if you are picking up your gown or if you need a fourth fitting.

If you are not picking up your gown, that will be discussed prior to this appointment, then you will set up a time to have your gown picked up after we have pressed or steamed it for your big day.

Usually your last fitting is near the time of your wedding. Please do not panic if your final fitting and pick up is the week of your wedding. It is absolutely normal for this to occur.

We also want to say, out of state and out of the country brides have different protocol and please ask your stylist for more information.

We hope this helps you get a little idea of what to expect when you come in for your fittings here at The Collection. If you ever have any questions during any part of the process feel free to ask one of our consultants or seamstresses! They’re here for you.

As always, thanks for reading!

Behind The Scenes

When a lot of brides picture themselves going dress shopping, they picture standing on a pedestal with their friends and family around them ooh-ing and aah-ing. Here at The Collection, we assure you we will try our best to make this vision come true. But, what we want to talk about in this blog post is a little bit about what happens behind the scenes while you are dress shopping.

This is such an exciting experience, one that most brides dream of since they were a little girl. But we want to remind our brides that excitement may not be the only emotion you feel while dress shopping. You may feel a little nervous, or even overwhelmed, and this is why your consultant will stay with you the entire time. She’ll guide you through all of the beautiful dresses (because yes, there are a lot of them) and she’ll help you handle all of the opinions that might be thrown your way by friends and family. But the most important thing we can tell you is that while it’s so normal to feel an array of emotions, it’s so important to be transparent with your consultant. We want to be there for you as best as we can!

When I say that the consultant will be with you the entire time, I mean the ENTIRE time. She’ll help you in & out of the dresses, while staying in the fitting room with you throughout the appointment. There is absolutely no reason to feel uncomfortable or embarrassed! We are all women here and this is our job. That fitting room is an absolute no judgement zone, & we’ll make sure you feel that way.

It’s also important to note that all of the dresses you will try on will be sample size. We have so many dresses here at The Collection, so there would just be no way to carry each dress in different sizes. Please don’t be discouraged if a dress is too big or too small. We will make it work! Then of course when you decide on your perfect gown, we’ll order it in your closest size & then our alterations team will take over from there.

Overall, behind the scenes and on the pedestal in front of your friends & family, your consultant will make sure that dress shopping here at The Collection is an amazing experience for you. We hope to see you soon!

Thanks for reading.
